In anticipation of valley's indie-folk singer songwriter Laura Power's second release 'Broken', we had a quick chat and reviewed the new single.
Hey Laura, lovely to chat to you again!
Hey!! Thanks so much!
Great news, you've got a new single coming out! Is this to accompany your first release or, because of the change in tempo, have you opted to go in a different direction?
I love this new track because it's so different to my last single but yeah the aim was to go in a different direction with this track.
I've already chosen four words to describe your track but what four words would you use?
Four words I'd use for my track would be folky, beaty, dark & fun.
This is our second interview together and I was wondering if you have any new influences since the last time! Has anything happened that inspired your new track?
I've recently started listening to Caroline rose she's pretty cool it takes a lot for me to really dig an artist and I tend to really listen to the lyrics rather than anything else but really digging her at the moment.
And the new track was surprisingly written by myself when I was 15 or 16 I'm almost 21 so it was a few years ago now at the time it was written about a guy haha but now I feel this song can reflect on a few different ways of being broken and that's why I love this song so much because I feel it isn't just a song about a bad romance it's much more than that.
What excites you the most about your latest single?
What excites me most about this song is that it's so different from my last record and I think people won't be expecting it to sound the way it does and in excited to see people's reactions.
I know it's early days but can we expect an EP or album anytime soon?
I'd love to do an EP or an album at some point but it's not at the top of my list at the moment... But soon maybe.
If you could collaborate with anyone (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
If I could collaborate with someone who's dead it'd probably have to go with Bowie! He had a huge influence on me in my teen years and his music is incredible.
Artistry wise, and they don't have to be a musician, who do you think reflects the mood and energy of Wales at the moment? Anyone particularly influential for you? I mean Michael Sheen is such an ambassador for Wales and Japan are embracing the Welsh nation so much with the rugby! Who does it for you?
Ooo that questions really hard about who reflects Wales I'm not sure to be honest but I've been loving the rugby :)
Well it was lovely chatting! Anything you'd like to add?
There's so much coming and I seriously can't wait
We can't wait either! Continue on to read our review on Laura's next single 'Broken'.
4 words: bubbly, emotive, captivating, intense.
Laura has only gone and done it again: she’s released a stunningly honest track, very different from the last. This song is a swift-tempo, jaunty indie-folk tune which, despite it’s moving lyrics, really evokes some good energy. Laura displays her indisputable artistry through her profound heartfelt and velvety vocals and her earnest songwriting. We expected this to be a tear-jerker but ‘Broken’ is a short and snappy, Amy MacDonald-esque indie-folk melody.
Laura, with her soulful voice and lovely personality, will go far!
You can catch Laura perform this track and many others at her single launch party in Treforest Green Rooms on November 9th.
You can hear ‘Broken’ on Friday November 8th!
