TEMPLES SHOWCASE AN EVENING OF CRAFTSMANSHIP WITH SUNKISSED GROOVES AND THE CHARISMA OF THE FAB FOUR; KINDLING IMAGES OF FREE-SPIRITS CIRCLING FIRE PITS ACROSS THE SANDY DUNES OF THE WEST COAST.
Temples; the flower-children of our time; packing out what should be bell-bottomed covered dancefloors full of smiley, peace-loving revolutionists. Instead, they had a floor made-up of old leather, band t-shirts, and raincoats - but boy did they make us feel we were living in 1964. The Kettering four-piece took over renowned Cardiff venue Clwb Ifor Bach, bringing with them a taste of the British Invasion. Monday night marked the end of their Independent Venue Week run as well as the first time they stepped foot on Cardiff soil since their Shimmer Sounds performance in 2019; and it was worth the four year wait.
Opening the evening was lusty, fever-dream single ‘Certainty’; a concoction of dreamy soundscapes drenched in synth and distortion. Temples displayed an evening of craftsmanship through sunkissed grooves, and the charisma of The Fab Four. With tracks such as ‘Keep In The Dark’ and ‘Gamma Rays’ (their latest offering) boasting an array of trippy accents that kindle images of free-spirits circling fire pits across the sandy dunes of sunset-laden beaches. It’s clear Temples are in love with an era way before their time; with a nostalgic taste of the British Invasion and a fusion of sixties sensibilities, glittery melodies and velvety choruses proving that on Monday night.
‘Paraphernalia’ and ‘Colours to Life’ provided a psychedelic explosion of heady vocals, hazy harmonies, and balmy hooks that captured the captivating soundscapes of the British four-piece; songs we can dance to aimlessly in flower-ridden fields and a hint that summertime is almost upon us. ‘Mesmerise’ ended the night after an accolade of applause and calls of ‘I want more’; four minutes of caramel tinged melodies that finalised their set that had awoken the bohemian psyche of the entire crowd that evening.
Temples release their fourth album ‘Exotico’ April 14th via ATO Records, which you can pre-order now.
